So that's what I did. But if I'd done that at any sort of civilized hour I'd arrive in Paris 30 minutes after the flight to Mali left. So a day on an open tour bus can have some painful results. Nevertheless, it was a good thing to do.We arrived in Buenos Aires New Year's afternoon after a 12-hour flight from Toronto. To my surprise I was able to sleep through most of it, waking in time to see dawn over the Orinoco River and Guyana. Both of us went to bed with socks on - wet socks, with a fan blowing over them. The idea, from an Australian, was that the socks would cool our feet and thus the rest of us as the water evaporated, and the evaporating water would also cool the air blowing over us. It seemed to work for Ron. He slept much longer than usual, even after his socks dried. Yesterday Rachel tried to leave town. Unfortunately she decided to do it at the same time as several thousand people heading out on the haj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
