Last week we went to school via Galatasaray, a part of İstanbul that has many book stores and other interesting places. We got out of the taxi right into a bunch of police:
Looks like Ron's in serious trouble! Actually there was a demonstration on the other side of the street - Kurdish rights, I think.
On the way to school we passed through the Taksim Metro station. There's a very handsome mural on the wall there:
The street between Galatasaray and Taksim is a very popular shopping area. It includes one of the world's first shopping malls, Çiçek Pasaj (early 20th century):
Behind the street are some scenic lanes, mostly full of restaurants:
This is what our school looks like:
Nothing very fancy, really. It's behind the local police station in the middle of a parking lot. The parking lot attendant does what he can to improve the atmosphere of the place:
That's a grapevine he's draped over the back of the police station wall.
A week ago our class spent a day on Büyükada, our home island. We went with them to a monastery built on one of the island hilltops. Aya Yorgyo they call it here: St. George's monastery. It's supposed to be the place where St. George slew the dragon. I think it's actually another of those 'hıgh places' the Hebrew prophets were always carrying on about - probably a place hit by lightening that became known as a place close to the gods. It's very beautiful up there.
This is a view of the other islands, looking west over the Sea of Marmara.
This is a very hilly island, which may be why we're finding our clothes fit better now than they did a month ago. Every day we have to climb a considerable hill to get home. On Monday it seems incredibly steep; by Friday we're wondering what the problem was. This is the view up the hill on a Monday evening. Our house ıs the white one at the end of the path; we have the top right apartment.
